L'Île-d'Olonne is part of the agglomeration of Sables-d'Olonne. It is located 10 km from Sables-d'Olonne. This village was inhabited during the Bronze Age, tools have been found. During the Roman occupation, salt marshes were created as well as vineyards. In the 5th century, Saint Martin de Vertou evangelized the island of Olonne and traces of a first church can be found around 950, the reign of the Capetian king Robert II of France called Robert the Pious... The Normans settled in the region and built a few mottes castrales. The wars, be they Hundred Years', Religious or Vendean, did not affect this village. The church dates from the 13th century and its patron saint is the evangelizing monk Saint Martin de Vertou. This is a quiet little village where life is good, with pleasant walks in the marshes and in the Olonne forest.
